Borrowed Scenery, Campbelltown Arts Centre
Wednesday 2 January 2019 – Sunday 10 March 2019
Closing event, Friday 8 March 2019 | 6pm – 8pm
For centuries, women have been the subjects of male artists, inserted into scenes framed by the male gaze. Borrowed Scenery explores what happens when the subjects of this gaze look back, step outside the frame, and assert their own vision and experience of the world.
With over 50 artworks from the Campbelltown City collection including ceramics, weavings, sculpture, paintings prints and new media, Borrowed Scenery celebrates and acknowledges the significance and influence of individual practice. Rather than becoming a subject of a scene, Borrowed Scenery creates a reflection of unique achievement and explores the discourses of female representation within collections and exhibitions. In response to Borrowed Scenery, The Countess Report will be critiquing the permanent collection addressing institutional accountability within contemporary arts.
